Ozone Catalytic Oxidation: A Green Breakthrough in Pharmaceutical Wastewater Treatment
The rapid development of the pharmaceutical industry, while safeguarding human health, has also brought severe wastewater treatment challenges. Pharmaceutical wastewater is rich in refractory organics, heavy metal ions and biotoxic substances; direct discharge would seriously damage the ecological balance and threaten human health. At a large pharmaceutical enterprise, the wastewater COD exceeded 6000 mg/L — far above the national discharge standard — and conventional treatment processes could not cope. Against this background, the ozone catalytic oxidation process developed by SINOKLE has brought a green revolution to pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.
The core of SINOKLE's technology is the CDOF process (cyclonic dissolved-ozone flotation), which innovatively integrates three technologies — ozone advanced oxidation, cyclonic flow and dissolved-air flotation — into a highly efficient wastewater treatment system. The key lies in the application of multiple catalytic oxidation technologies, including homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Homogeneous catalysis adds metal ions to accelerate ozone decomposition, while heterogeneous catalysis uses porous carriers to enhance catalyst stability and activity. Working together, they lower the reaction activation energy, speed up ozone self-decomposition and raise the hydroxyl radical (·OH) concentration, strengthening the oxidation effect. The cyclonic technology optimizes the mixing efficiency of ozone and wastewater, while the dissolved-air flotation uses the ozone's gel-breaking and demulsification effects to reduce coagulant dosage and further improve effluent quality.

The core competitiveness of the process also stems from SINOKLE's independently developed heterogeneous ozone catalyst. After countless formulation adjustments and process optimizations, the R&D team adopted a composite of highly active precious metals and transition metals as the active components, controlling the particle size below 10 nanometers through nanotechnology to greatly increase the specific surface area and reaction efficiency. Combined with stable carrier materials and special additives, the catalyst not only achieves efficient oxidation at low ozone concentrations but also offers an exceptionally long service life and low loss rate. Under simulated operating condition tests, the COD removal rate can exceed 80%, the color removal rate approaches 100%, and the service life far exceeds the industry average.

The engineering design of the CDOF unit is another highlight. Ozone dissolves rapidly and disperses highly uniformly in the wastewater under pressure, shortening reaction time dramatically compared with conventional technology; the footprint is only one-third of that of traditional processes or less. The fully automated, closed pressurized operation mode reduces manual intervention, completely eliminates the risk of ozone leakage, and produces no harmful by-products during treatment — fully in line with the green, low-carbon and sustainable requirements of modern industrial development.

The practical effectiveness of the technology was fully verified in an application case at a large pharmaceutical enterprise in Inner Mongolia. The enterprise had previously used a conventional biological treatment process with a COD removal rate of only about 15% and struggled to meet the standard. After adopting SINOKLE's CDOF process, with a retention time of only 45 minutes, the brown, high-concentration, high-color, biotoxic raw water was treated into clear, transparent, compliant effluent: COD was reduced to below 200 mg/L, suspended solids below 20 mg/L, and the B/C ratio rose from below 0.1 to 0.37. After several months of continuous industrial operation, the catalyst activity loss rate was below 5%, delivering both treatment performance and economic benefits.
Through the deep integration of technological innovation and engineering practice, SINOKLE's ozone catalytic oxidation process has cracked the industry problem of pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. Its efficient, environmentally friendly and economical advantages provide reliable support for the green transformation of the pharmaceutical industry and open up a new path for the field of water pollution control, demonstrating the powerful force of environmental technology in enabling high-quality development.
