Applications and Advantages of the KFM Active Media Filter in Wastewater Treatment
The KFM active media filter is a technologically advanced water purification unit, widely applicable to produced water treatment at oilfields and offshore platforms, refining and other industrial wastewater, and filtration of other types of wastewater, where it demonstrates excellent treatment capability. With its distinctive structural design and the KFM long-life active filter media — engineered specifically for oily wastewater — it meets the demanding requirements of long-term stable filtration of oily water.
In line with the characteristics of oilfield wastewater and treatment standards, the filter's bed and overall structure were custom-designed. This not only ensures controllable operation but also significantly improves treatment efficiency. In addition, optimisation of the internal water distribution and collection systems, together with improvements to the backwash process, further enhance overall unit performance.

As for the media, the product uses a new active filter media produced through more than sixty processing steps and a super-hydrophilic modification process. The media is a silicate-based active material with a high melting point, suitable specific gravity, no odour and insolubility in water. Notably, it offers high filtration accuracy, low flow resistance, stable effluent quality, strong anti-fouling performance, easy cleaning and long service life, giving it outstanding performance in wastewater treatment.
Under actual operating conditions, the KFM active media filter generally requires influent oil content of 50 ppm or less and suspended solids of 50 mg/L or less. After treatment, effluent oil content can drop to 6 ppm or less, suspended solids to 2 mg/L or less, with a median particle size of 1.5 μm or less. This marked purification effect means the unit is often deployed at the end of the wastewater treatment train to ensure discharge indicators comply with the relevant standards.

The technical features of the filter are mainly reflected in the following aspects. First, the media surface is negatively charged and can adsorb positively charged substances, providing self-inhibiting antibacterial function, resisting agglomeration and facilitating backwashing. Second, the media has a large specific surface area and an activated molecular sieve structure, enabling high-accuracy filtration and excellent effluent quality. Third, through graded proportioning of media with different particle sizes, the skid-mounted filter using KFM active media can deliver two effluent standards: Grade III coarse filtration quality and Grade II fine filtration quality. Fourth, the media is wear-resistant and durable with low operating and maintenance cost, significantly saving users' long-term investment.
In summary, with its advanced process, efficient filtration capability and reliable quality, the KFM active media filter is increasingly becoming a key unit in wastewater treatment. As the technology continues to evolve and applications expand, the product will demonstrate its unique technical value and market potential in more settings.
