As a special catalytic material, the ozone catalyst effectively promotes the decomposition of ozone and its conversion into other species. It is widely applied in air purification, waste gas treatment, water treatment, organic synthesis and other fields. In air purification scenarios, the catalyst achieves efficient removal of harmful gases and odor substances; in wastewater treatment, it enables ozone to directly oxidize organic matter in water into carbon dioxide and water through catalysis, and can also oxidatively break macromolecular organics into small molecules, significantly improving the biodegradability of pollutants.

Its action mechanism mainly relies on the active sites on the catalyst surface, which promote the decomposition of ozone into oxygen molecules and hydroxyl radicals (·OH); these reactive species then participate in chemical reactions, ultimately converting harmful substances into harmless ones.

1. Performance Evaluation

In practical application, how to evaluate the performance of an ozone catalyst and complete the selection work is crucial. The performance evaluation system of ozone catalysts mainly covers core indicators such as activity, selectivity, stability and poisoning resistance, which can be comprehensively assessed by combining laboratory testing with verification in industrial applications.

2. Selection by Application Purpose

The selection of an ozone catalyst should start from the application purpose:

Ozone-elimination scenarios: the corresponding catalyst type should be selected according to the ozone concentration (low, medium or high), and the catalyst form determined in combination with the specific operating conditions.

Ozone-utilization scenarios: the catalyst should be screened according to the composition of the waste gas or wastewater and the operating condition information.

3. Key Selection Dimensions

High specific surface area: according to the composition of pollutants in the wastewater, a substrate with high affinity adsorption capacity should be selected as the ozone catalyst. When the wastewater contacts the catalyst, organics preferentially enrich on the catalyst surface, and the ozone subsequently introduced achieves efficient mass transfer and oxidation reactions on the surface. Thanks to this enrichment effect, the degradation is faster and more thorough, greatly improving the COD removal rate.

Uniform distribution of active components: some ozone catalysts on the market carry active material only on their surface, so products with highly active catalytic components uniformly distributed inside and outside should be selected. Uniformly distributed active components lower the activation energy for the oxidative decomposition of organic compounds, making it easier for ozone molecules to decompose under catalysis and produce strongly oxidizing radicals, thereby significantly improving the oxidation capacity, reaction speed and conversion rate of ozone, and reducing the residual ozone content in the tail gas.

High-temperature sintering stability: a high-quality ozone catalyst should adopt multiple high-efficiency active metal oxides and elemental metals as catalytic materials, and use a three-dimensional framework technology to increase the number of micropores and optimize their distribution uniformity under high temperature. Such catalysts are resistant to powder shedding and have a long service life, while possessing higher specific surface area and active surface to maximize the oxidation efficiency of ozone.

4. SINOKLE Example

Take the heterogeneous ozone catalyst developed by SINOKLE as an example: the product uses a variety of transition metal oxides and noble metals as catalytic components, and through a catalyst loading technology and staged precise temperature-controlled sintering process, it reduces the loss rate of active components while ensuring catalytic activity and high strength; its special micropore forming technology achieves high specific surface area, giving the catalyst excellent loading performance and significantly improved catalytic reaction rate and efficiency; the superhydrophilicity of the catalyst carrier makes it resistant to fouling, scaling and blockage, with an oxidation efficiency 2–5 times higher than conventional ozone catalytic oxidation technology, showing excellent adaptability and catalytic activity. The technology has been widely applied in COD removal for coal chemical wastewater, refinery and petrochemical wastewater, landfill leachate and other fields, with remarkable treatment results.
