Emulsified Oil Separation Revolution: How Cyclonic Dissolved-Air Flotation Replaces Conventional DAF
In industrial oily wastewater treatment, efficient separation of emulsified oil has always been a technical difficulty. Although conventional dissolved-air flotation (DAF) is widely used, it suffers from long residence times, a large footprint, the need for chemical dosing and secondary pollution. The emergence of cyclonic dissolved-air flotation (CDFU) technology is driving a revolution in emulsified oil separation; with its efficiency, compactness and environmental friendliness, it has become the innovative alternative to conventional DAF.
1. Technical Bottlenecks of Conventional DAF
Conventional DAF relies on releasing large volumes of dissolved gas bubbles that attach to oil droplets to achieve separation, but it has obvious shortcomings:
Low efficiency: a residence time of 15-40 minutes, with single-stage oil removal typically only 60%-85%.
Large footprint: open design relying on large concrete tanks.
Secondary pollution: chemical demulsifiers are required, producing oily sludge (hazardous waste) and increasing treatment difficulty and cost.
Poor stability: weak adaptability to influent water-quality fluctuations and easily affected by shock loads.

2. CDFU technology's revolutionary breakthrough
CDFU technology achieves a leap in performance through the ingenious integration of cyclonic centrifugal separation, ultra-fine bubble generation and dissolved-air flotation:
High-efficiency separation mechanism: CDFU utilises strong centrifugal force to first separate heavy suspended solids, after which ultra-fine bubbles of only 5-30 μm (conventional DAF bubbles are typically 5-100 μm) efficiently attach and demulsify. Single-stage oil removal exceeds 90% and suspended solids removal exceeds 85%, with effluent oil content stably controlled below 10 mg/L.
Extremely short residence time: CDFU boasts a highly optimised flow path, with a hydraulic retention time of only 1-5 minutes - 3-8 times the efficiency of conventional DAF - greatly increasing treatment capacity.
Purely physical, green process: the technology requires no chemicals; oil-water separation is achieved by purely physical demulsification, eliminating oily sludge at the source and solving the secondary pollution problem.
Compact and intelligent design: CDFU adopts a fully enclosed skid-mounted design requiring only one third of the footprint of conventional DAF, making it especially suitable for space-constrained plants or offshore platforms. Integrated IoT and AI technologies support remote monitoring and unattended operation, significantly reducing labour costs.

3. Comprehensive Advantages over Conventional DAF
Compared with conventional DAF, CDFU offers comprehensive advantages:

In addition, CDFU offers significant economic advantages through no chemical consumption, greatly reduced sludge disposal costs and revenue from recovered oil.
Cyclonic dissolved-air flotation (CDFU) technology, with its efficient separation, rapid response, environmental friendliness and compact intelligence, has successfully solved the pain points of conventional DAF in emulsified oil treatment, marking an important innovation in oily wastewater treatment. As environmental requirements tighten and land costs continue to rise, CDFU technology is expected to become the preferred alternative to conventional DAF in petrochemical, oilfield and other sectors, driving industrial wastewater treatment towards greater efficiency and sustainability.
