In oilfields that use polymer flooding, the produced fluids often contain markedly elevated polymer concentrations, creating a special type of industrial wastewater: high-polymer produced water.

Main characteristics of high-polymer produced water

  • High polymer content: the polymer concentration is far higher than in wastewater from conventional water-flooding operations.

  • Difficult oil-water separation: the presence of polymer makes oil and water harder to separate, which can waste crude oil and significantly raises treatment costs.

  • Formation damage: if such water is reinjected into the reservoir it easily plugs pore throats, reduces the water injectivity of the oil layer and ultimately affects well output.

Main risks posed by this water

  • Environmental pollution risk: if discharged, its chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand and other indicators readily exceed limits and harm the environment.

  • Higher economic cost: the water is hard and expensive to treat, and the treated quality often fails to meet reinjection or discharge standards, putting sustained economic pressure on oilfield operators.

Current treatment technologies and the challenges they face
Considerable research has been carried out in China and abroad on treating this water, proposing technologies such as gravity oil removal, coalescing oil removal, filtration, flotation, biological treatment and membrane separation. Yet these methods still have clear limitations with high-polymer produced water:

  • Difficult polymer degradation: existing processes cannot effectively degrade the polymer, which affects final effluent quality.

  • Low oil-water separation efficiency: interference from the polymer makes efficient, stable oil-water separation hard to achieve.

  • Stubbornly high treatment cost: advanced processes and equipment are usually required, so overall investment is large.

Treating high-polymer produced water has long been a priority and a difficulty in oilfield environmental protection, and a more targeted, efficient and stable process breakthrough is urgently needed.sinokle
