In the complex system of the refining industry, every feedstock stream and every process carries profound chemical logic and environmental challenges. As a technology service provider deeply engaged in industrial oil-water separation and advanced oxidation, SINOKLE understands well that understanding the nature of pollutants at the source is the foundation for developing efficient and stable treatment solutions. We will take you through an in-depth analysis of the core component of refinery heavy feedstock -- C16 and above (C16+) substances -- and reveal their intrinsic connection to the difficulties of electric desalting wastewater treatment, showing how SINOKLE confronts these industry challenges with innovative technology.

1. Understanding the "Skeleton" of Heavy Feedstock: What Are C16+ Components?
Petroleum is not a single substance but a complex mixture of "carbon chains" (hydrocarbon molecules) of varying lengths. The number of carbon atoms on the chain directly determines the properties of the molecule. C16+ components, i.e. hydrocarbons with 16 or more carbon atoms and their derivatives, are precisely the root of the "heaviness" and "stickiness" of heavy feedstock. They have high molecular weight and are difficult to volatilize, and they form the main framework of heavy crude oil, waste oil and residue.

2. The "Map" of C16+ in Three Types of Heavy Feedstock
Heavy crude oil: natural enrichment
As the basis of refining, heavy crude oil contains as much as 70%-90% C16+ components. These high-carbon-number saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, resins and asphaltenes, formed from ancient organic matter under geological processes, constitute its complex "genome".

Heavy waste oil: a by-product of the process
Heavy waste oil is a complex mixture produced during refining, witha C16+ content of about 65%-85%. Its composition includes both incompletely converted feedstock residue and polymerization products newly formed at high temperature; it has poor stability and is difficult to treat.

Residue: the ultimate distillation remainder
Residue is the remainder after atmospheric and vacuum distillation with a boiling point above350C, in which C16+ components are extremely concentrated, reaching 85%-98%. It is almost a pure collection of high-carbon heavy components, representing the hardest-to-treat fraction of the feedstock.

3. The Core Challenge:C16+ Pollutants in Electric Desalting Wastewater
Electric desalting is the first pretreatment step in refining, and the wastewater it generates is an important source of oily wastewater in the plant. AlthoughC16+ components are hydrophobic, they still enter the wastewater through oil-phase entrainment, trace dissolution and equipment scouring, forming stubborn pollutants.

These pollutants mainly include high-carbon alkanes/naphthenes (60%-75%), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heteroatom compounds containing sulfur/nitrogen/oxygen, and resin/asphaltene fragments. Their total concentration is usually in the range of 10-150 mg/L. Although trace in amount, the heteroatom compounds and some aromatic hydrocarbons among them are highly biotoxic and difficult to degrade; conventional gravity settling and ordinary flotation processes struggle to remove them effectively, making them a key bottleneck restricting effluent compliance and the stability of subsequent biological treatment.

4. The SINOKLE Solution: A Precision Strike onthe C16+ Pollution Challenge
Faced with the highly emulsified, fine-particle, hard-to-degradeC16+ pollutants in electric desalting wastewater, SINOKLE, drawing on a deep understanding of industry pain points, has introduced a customized process centered on
“CDFUcyclonic dissolved gas flotation+CDOFozone catalytic oxidation+KFM active filter media filter", achieving precise treatment across the whole process from efficient oil removal to deep oxidation.

Efficient demulsification and oil removal (CDFU):Targeting the core problem of oil-phase entrainment,CDFUthe technology uses supergravity cyclone and ultra-fine bubble technology to generate centrifugal force hundreds of times greater than gravity, powerfully breaking the emulsified state so that fine oil droplets (including C16+ components) rapidly coalesce and separate, with oil removal efficiency stable above 95%. This technology has been successfully applied to the electric desalting wastewater treatment project of large refining enterprises such as PetroChina Dushanzi Petrochemical, significantly reducing the oil content of the effluent.

Deep oxidative degradation (CDOF):For dissolved and hard-to-degrade heteroatom compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the like, conventional biological methods are helpless. SINOKLE'sCDOFunit uses heterogeneous ozone catalytic oxidation technology to efficiently generate hydroxyl radicals (OH), whose oxidizing power is 2-5 times that of ordinary ozone; it can non-selectively and thoroughly destroy the molecular structure of hard-to-degrade C16+ organics, converting them into readily biodegradable small molecules or into CO2 and H2O, greatly reducing COD and toxicity.

Terminal precision filtration (KFM):To ensure absolutely clear effluent and stable compliance, the KFM active filter media filter uses filter media modified by atomic layer deposition technology; through the dual action of physical interception and surface adsorption, it achieves micron-level (1 um) precision filtration, ensuring a final effluent oil content of no more than 5 mg/L and suspended solids of no more than 2 mg/L, far better than strict discharge or reuse standards.

5. Technical Value: Beyond Compliance, Greater Efficiency
SINOKLE's integrated solution not only overcomesthe challenge of treating C16+ pollutants but also brings significant overall benefits to customers:

Purely physical separation, green and economical:the core oil removal stage requires no chemical agents, avoiding the generation of oily sludge (hazardous waste) at the source; the recovered oil is of high quality and can be directly reused, turning waste into value.
Compact skid-mounted, saving space and worry:the modular design gives a footprint of only1/3-1/5 of conventional processes, with a short construction period, particularly suitable for old plant retrofits or space-constrained projects.
Intelligent and stable, easy to operate and maintain:the entire system runs automatically and in a closed loop, with strong shock resistance and the ability to adapt to feedstock fluctuations, greatly reducing manual operating intensity and O&M costs.

From multiple benchmark projects with PetroChina and Sinopec to wide application in overseas oilfields and refineries, SINOKLE's technology has become a reliable choice for tackling difficult industrial oily wastewater, especially electric desalting wastewater. We believe that only innovation that grasps the essence can achieve sustainable development of industry and the environment. SINOKLE will continue to focus on cutting-edge oil-water separation technology, providing global customers with more efficient and more economical environmental solutions.
